Now you can have the same great McWhinney's taste without the Gluten!

We have been making the same high quality Irish Pork Sausages since 1898 and our current Managing Director, Kevin, has promised to be loyal to the original recipe that has served the past four generations so well.

In December 2018 an event occurred which forced a change in his thinking. Kevin discovered that he is gluten intolerant following a diagnosis of Coeliac Disease. Unfortunately this meant that he could no longer enjoy the sausages which he had eaten since he was a young lad.

This really upset Kevin to the point where he decided he had to do something about it. His mission was to recreate the original McWhinney’s sausage, but with one major difference – it had to be gluten free and it had to taste every bit as delicious as the original McWhinney’s sausages.

Over the coming months Kevin made a number of unsuccessful attempts to recreate the original taste. Nothing that they tried matched the the quality of the original McWhinney's sausage. After many failed attempts Kevin and the team finally came up with a recipe which not only pleased him, but tasted just like the original McWhinney’s sausages he had been eating for so long.

The only downside is that the gluten free sausage will be slightly more expensive than the original, mainly due to the fact that only the best of ingredients were used to ensure the best possible taste and bite. With that said though Kevin believes that coeliacs all over the country will be able to enjoy a gluten free sausage which tastes like a real McWhinney’s sausage.

Kevin has always believed that he should not sell a product that he is not prepared to let his family eat, so, on this occasion, the person he had to please was the biggest food critic in his family – himself.

To this day one of the most important principles Kevin had been taught in business came from both his late father and grandfather when they said that quality will remain long after price is forgotten.

Our Managing Director loves the taste of McWhinney Sausage’s but when he was diagnosed as celiac, unfortunately he was no longer allowed them due to dietary restrictions. When he came into the office the smell of cooking sausages would drive him crazy – it was then he realised he wasn’t the only one missing out on our delicious sausages - and that is when the McWhinneys Gluten Free Sausage was born.

McWhinneys Sausage’s take pride in producing quality Irish pork sausages with the same care and tradition first adopted in 1898. Two of our amazing Bigfoot Sausages customers - Bestwood Fisheries and Dunkeld Fish Bar have come up with a scrumptious Bigfoot "Special".

Bestwood fisheries - wrapped our Bigfoot sausages in bacon and were a massive hit around Christmas time and they were struggling to keep up with demand.

Dunkeld Fish Bar - They used our Bigfoot sausages wrapped in Maple cured streaky bacon as a special over the Christmas period and the response was so amazing that they ended up being interviewed by the Daily Record.

Scott Davies the owner of The Dunkeld Fish Bar said "McWhinneys Bigfoot Sausages are simply the best frying sausages you can get. When my wife Shannon suggested wrapping them in maple bacon for a Christmas special, I knew she was on to something. We give them a try and were blown away by how amazing they tasted. The Customer feedback was incredible, and word of mouth meant customers were driving from near and far to try the Bigfoot in bacon. These will definitely be a Christmas staple from now on"

The team visited the Fortune Kids & Education Foundation Orphanage where Al and Mal got stuck in to preparing lunch for everyone.

Disney order Frying Nemo to change its name…

The owners of a fish and chip shop in Adelaide, Australia, have been ordered to change the name of their takeaway for breaching copyright rules. Grace and Andrew Crawford, whose shop Frying Nemo opened two months ago, spent thousands on signage, graphics and menus. They now face a similar bill to re-do all their hard more...

It’s not the name that has landed the pair in hot water – there are several Frying Nemo’s across the world including one in Goole, Yorkshire – but rather the graphics, which Disney claims show a close similarity to its popular animated character.

In an interview with Australian TV channel Sunrise, owner Grace Crawford comments: “We have definitely changed it. We went to our graphic designer who changed it over 5% from what you really need to do for copyright.”

The owners are seeking advice from lawyers to challenge the multi-national company.

The story echoes that of Essex chippy Scooby Snax, which 12 months ago was made to change its name after film giant Hanna Barbera claimed it held all the rights to the TV character Scooby Doo. Owners John McNeill and Andrea Smith were forced to rename their restaurant and takeaway of eight years to Johnny Mac’s Plaice.

Would you Adam and Eve it?! As fate would have it, McWhinney’s £100 cash Bigfoot competition that took place on the company’s Facebook page on Monday 16th September was won by a Henderson! The amusing coincidence occurred when three office staff chose a random combination of numbers, which lead to Comber’s Elaine Henderson cashing in on the prize. The link between Bigfoot, Elaine Henderson, and the 1987 Bigfoot movie, Harry and the Hendersons is seen as a real twist of fate!
To make things even more ‘freaky’, Elaine is a Comber resident, the village where the McWhinney’s established their first butcher’s shop in 1898. She also went to the same school as the McWhinney’s, and Elaine is also the name of Kevin’s wife!
The links between the winner and the McWhinney’s brand are numerous, and the company will be having a further two £100 winners in next month’s Facebook competition for those who ‘Like’ and share the page. Simply log onto “Bigfoot Sausages” on Facebook for details, and get entering!

McWhinney’s Pork sausages with pineapple salsa and rocket salad!

Give this a go folks- we promise you’ll love it! Ingredients For the sausages and salsa 8 McWhinney’s Premium Pork sausages 1 tbsp soft brown sugar 300g/10½oz fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into ½cm/¼in dice ½ red chilli, finely diced 1 tbsp sambal oelek (Indonesian chili sauce) 1 lime, juice only 2 tbsp finely more...

Give this a go folks- we promise you’ll love it!

Ingredients

For the sausages and salsa

8 McWhinney’s Premium Pork sausages

1 tbsp soft brown sugar

300g/10½oz fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into ½cm/¼in dice

½ red chilli, finely diced

1 tbsp sambal oelek (Indonesian chili sauce)

1 lime, juice only

2 tbsp finely chopped fresh coriander

salt, to taste

For the rocket salad with lemon vinaigrette

1 lemon, juice only

4 tbsp olive oil

2 bunches rocket

Preparation method

For the sausages and salsa, preheat the oven to 180C/375F/Gas 5.

Place the McWhinney’s Pork Sausages in a baking tray and roast for 25-30 minutes, or until cooked through.

Meanwhile, place a frying pan onto a medium heat and add the sugar. As soon as the sugar starts to melt and is nearly caramelised, add the diced pineapple.

Cook the pineapple, stirring every minute for 4-5 minutes, or until lightly caramelised.

Tip the pineapple into a medium bowl and add the chilli, sambal oelek, lime juice and coriander. Mix together and add salt, to taste.

To serve, whisk together the lemon and olive oil in a small bowl and tip the rocket into a salad bowl. Dress the salad with the lemon and olive oil and serve it with the sausages and the salsa.
